Creator and Coordinator, Professional Women's Speaker Series
Purnell School
September 2010-June 2013

On ten select nights throughout the school year, professional women from a variety of fields speak to students about their education, career path, strengths utilized, and advice for the future.  Speakers are invited based on expressed student interests, and so that students may be exposed to a wide variety of professions.  Upon completion, students are encouraged to introduce themselves and practice their networking skills.

Own It Ventures is a professional organization for women entrepreneurs to network and grow their businesses.  Purnell Students volunteered and networked at their yearly conference event, and networking with this group yielded many career speakers and internship sponsors.

Enrollment Duties include:

  • Growing the school’s enrollment by 10% total in fiscal years 2019 and 2020;
  • Retaining a significant portion of students and revenue during the 2020-2021 pandemic;
  • Managing the school’s robust financial aid program, including redesigns of the application process for increased equity and accessibility in 2019 and 2021, and a current project to institute a school-wide sliding scale tuition model for 2022-2023;
  • Directing and implementing the enrollment process for the school’s 550 students, including instituting a cloud-based enrollment management system in 2019, transitioning to hybrid programming in 2020, and managing the four-member enrollment team;
  • Actively and persistently learning, unlearning, and relearning in order to be anti-racist, promote equity and inclusion at the school and in society, and give voice and power to subordinated groups;
  • Participating in the equitable hiring process of all faculty and staff;
  • Supporting faculty and staff in their daily interactions with students and families through regular in-person, virtual, and email communications as well as more formal, pre-planned meetings;
  • Continued collaboration with other senior administrators on post-pandemic strategic planning, including quarterly and yearly scenario budgeting, developing responsive and relevant educational and community programming, fundraising, marketing, and ensuring equity and access in our diverse community.

  • Translating in Spanish for colleagues;
  • Informing prospective students about Purnell School;

  • Meeting with educational consultants;
  • Assisting with the translation of printed Purnell admissions materials.

Duties included:

  • Reading psychoeducational testing, letters of recommendation, admissions materials and essays; 
  • Examining transcripts, testing records, and previous IEPs;
  • Recommending accommodations and strategies to teachers and advisors upon admission to the school;
  • Following up with accommodations and strategies for new students.

Creator, Thomson Reuters/Purnell School Internship Program
Purnell School
June 2010, June 2011, June 2012

Created, coordinated, and managed the internship details and application process for this program.  Four Purnell students participated in a paid two-week summer internship at Thomson Reuters' headquarters in Times Square, New York City.  This unique opportunity offered students job experience with a global corporation, exposure to a number of departments within the company, experience working collaboratively on and presenting a research and design project, acquaintance with workplace etiquette, and valuable networking possibilities.  Students participated in a rigorous application and interview process to earn a position as a Thomson Reuters intern through this program.

Coordinator, Junior Summer Internship Program
Purnell School
September 2007-June 2013

Each Purnell student is required to participate in a two-week internship between her junior and senior year as part of a concerted effort to help her learn and explore her strengths.  Coordinator is charged with networking and making connections with potential internship sponsors, guiding students in the process of searching for and securing internships, approving proposals for internships, and collecting required internship materials including sponsor feedback and journal reflections.

Mallory Phillips ('06) Dinner and Discussion

A small group of ninth and tenth grade students met with Ms. Phillips to learn about her degree in communications and subsequent career at a nonprofit medical clinic in Houston, Texas. Ms. Phillips shared with the students valuable information about persevering in college, exploring a variety of career options, and being willing to work hard while climbing the ranks at a job.
